Laparoscopy in India

Laparoscopy is a surgical diagnostic procedure that allows the doctor to examine the organs inside abdomen and pelvis area without making any large incisions in the skin. As the incision made during the laparoscopy procedure is very small, it is also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery. This procedure is done using a device called “laparoscope”.

Procedure Type; Diagnostic procedure using endoscope

Surgery: Minor surgical process (Requires half a day)

Average Treatment Cost: 70,000

Medical Loan: 0% Interest EMI loan by Zealthy

Alternate Treatments: Laparotomy

A laparoscope is a small tube-like device that has a video camera and a light attached to it. The laparoscope tube is passed inside the body to look at the organs situated in the abdomen and pelvic area. The device relays the images of the internal organs to a video monitor. The doctor examines the organs during the procedure and decides on the next treatment plan as per the patient’s condition. Laparoscopy for infertility is done to examine the pelvic anatomy to find out the causes of female infertility.

As laparoscopic procedure is a minimally invasive procedure, it has many advantages over other traditional methods such as, less invasive procedure, less pain and rapid recovery. In most of the cases you are discharged on the same day of procedure.

Uses of Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy surgery can be used for the diagnosis of a wide range of conditions that develop inside the pelvis or abdomen. It can also be used to perform surgical procedures like removing a damaged or diseased organ or for a biopsy. It is commonly used for:

1. Examining and treating conditions affecting the female reproductive system (Gynecology Laparoscopy)

2. Examining and treating conditions affecting the digestive system (Gastroenterology Laparoscopy)

3. Examining and treating conditions affecting the urinary system (Urology Laparoscopy)

Diagnosing Medical Conditions Using Laparoscopy

Mostly it is possible to diagnose problems related to abdomen and pelvic region with non-invasive methods like ultrasound scan, MRI scan, CT scan, etc. However, sometimes it is necessary to directly examine the affected part for a proper diagnosis using procedures like laparoscopy. The examples of some of the conditions that may need a laparoscopy in women are as follows.

  • Unexplained abdomen or pelvic pain
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Ovarian cyst or tumors
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) (a bacterial infection in the female upper genital tract including ovaries, womb and fallopian tubes)
  • Endometriosis (a disorder in which tissues of womb lining starts growing outside the womb)
  • Ectopic Pregnancy (pregnancy that develops outside the womb)
  • Female Infertility (Women who are not being able to get pregnant after at least one year of trying)
  • Look for blockage of the fallopian tubes or for other causes of infertility
  • Appendicitis (swelling of the appendix which causes pain)

The examples of some of the conditions that may need a laparoscopy in men are as follows.

  • Undescended Testicles (a childhood condition in which a boy is born without one or both of his testicles in his scrotum)
  • Prostate removal Surgery ( most common causes for prostate surgery are prostate cancer and an enlarged prostate)
  • Appendicitis (swelling of the appendix which causes pain)

A laparoscopy Surgery can also be used to diagnosed cancers like:

  • Ovarian Cancer
  • Liver Cancer
  • Pancreatic Cancer
  • Gallbladder Cancer
  • Bile Duct Cancer

Treating Medical Conditions Using Laparoscopy

Laparoscopic surgeries can be performed for several conditions including:

  • Removing uterine fibroids
  • For tubal ligation procedure
  • Removing the uterus (also called laparoscopic hysterectomy)
  • Removing gallbladder often used in case of gallstones (also called laparoscopic cholecystectomy)
  • Removing appendix in case of appendicitis (also called laparoscopic appendectomy)
  • Removing a part of the intestine (usually used to treat digestive conditions like Crohn's disease or diverticulitis that are not responding to medicines)
  • Repairing hernias like the ones found in the groin
  • Repairing stomach ulcers
  • Removing organs affected by cancer like ovaries, liver, colon, bladder, kidney, etc

Laparoscopy Procedure

Laparoscopy procedure is performed under anesthesia so that the patient does not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. Generally, a general anesthetic is given before the procedure which makes the patient sleep through the entire procedure and they don’t feel any pain. In some cases, a doctor might use a local anesthetic which will only numb the area of operation and the patient won’t feel any pain but they will be awake during the procedure.

In Laparoscopy surgery the surgeon starts the procedure by making a small incision (cut) usually near the belly button. A tube is then inserted through the cut and carbon dioxide gas or a liquid solution is passed through it to inflate the belly. This helps the surgeon to see the organs more clearly and provide them with more space for movements.

The surgeon then inserts a laparoscope through this tube. The laparoscope sends the video images to the video monitor in the operating room giving the surgeon a clear view of the concerned area. If the laparoscopy is used for surgery like removing a fibroid then more incisions will be made in the belly to insert other instruments to repair or remove the affected organ.

After the procedure, the surgeon will let out the carbon dioxide gas or the liquid from the belly and the incisions will be closed using clips or stitches.

A laparoscopy surgery if done as a diagnostic procedure will be over within 30 to 60 minutes. It will take longer to perform a laparoscopy surgery depending on the condition that is being treated.

Recovery after Laparoscopic procedure

After a laparoscopy, a patient might feel disoriented as they recover from the effects of anesthesia. Some patients might also feel sick and vomit. However, these are the common side effects of general anesthesia and they wear off quickly. The patient will be monitored for a few hours by a nurse until they are fully awake and are able to drink, eat and urinate.

After the surgery for a few days, the patient is likely to feel some pain and discomfort in the area of the incisions. The doctor might give the patient some painkillers to help with the pain. The gas or the liquid used to inflate the belly during the procedure can cause cramps, bloating, shoulder pain, etc.

The time taken to recover from laparoscopy surgery is usually only a few days but may differ from case to case. The laparoscopy recovery depends on various factors like the reason for the procedure, any complications developed during the laparoscopy surgery and the overall health of the patient, etc.

If the laparoscopy was done for a diagnostic purpose the patient may recover within 5 days and go back to their normal activities. If it was done for treating a condition, the recovery time can be in weeks. For example, in a minor surgery like removal of the appendix also called laparoscopic appendectomy, a patient might recover within 3 weeks although, in a major surgery like removal of kidney or ovaries due to cancer, it might take as long as 12 weeks to fully recover.

Complications of Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy surgery is considered to be a safe procedure and major complications are rare. Some minor complications like infection, reaction due to the anesthetic, bruising or bleeding from the incision are possible. Some extremely rare complications like damage to an organ such as the bowel or bladder, blood clot in the legs, etc are also possible. About three out of every 1,000 women who have laparoscopy have complications. Possible complications include injury to nearby organs, bleeding, or a problem related to the anesthesia.
