Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) (one of the best options of infertility treatment)
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is one of the best and most popular infertility treatments. It is also referred to as Artificial Insemination, Donor Insemination or Alternative Insemination .
In this treatment, the sperm of a man is put directly inside a woman’s uterus (womb) around the time when she is ovulating . This helps the sperm get closer to the egg and fertilization can occur easily as compared to natural fertilisation. This procedure can increase your chances of getting pregnant.
The IUI treatment is usually used in couples who suffer from unexplained infertility, male factor infertility and women who suffer from problems with cervical mucus.
IUI is a low - tech minimally invasive procedure which is less costly than other infertility treatments like IVF. The IUI success rate in India is around 15% to 25%.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) (the most popular treatment of infertility treatment)
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is one of the most effective ART treatments. Because of its effectiveness, it is also the most in-demand infertility treatment. Till date, more than 5 million babies have been born using this method . In this procedure, the egg is fertilised with the help of the sperm in a laboratory.
This treatment is a combination of medications and surgical procedures. First, the woman is given fertility medications so that her body can produce multiple eggs. The doctor will then retrieve her eggs and sperm from the husband. After the retrieval, the doctor keeps the egg and sperm in the laboratory petri dish, in a controlled environment, for several hours for the fertilisation to occur. When the eggs are fertilized, the doctor will then place the fertilized egg known as an embryo in the womb of the woman.
An IVF treatment is used in case of damaged or blocked fallopian tubes, decreased sperm motility, decreased sperm count, unexplained infertility, ovulation disorder, uterine fibroids, premature ovarian failure, and many other conditions.
IVF is a lengthy procedure and it may take weeks for you to get pregnant after you start the procedure. Also, it will require you to visit the doctor’s clinic multiple times as well. IVF is also costly as compared to other fertility treatments. Although it is costly the success rate of IVF is about 35% to 75%. It is because the fertilized eggs are directly put into the uterus, which means the woman has more chances of getting pregnant in IVF than any other treatment. This is the reason why IVF is so popular among couples.
Surrogacy is also becoming popular in India these days. In Surrogacy, a woman (surrogate mother) agrees to carry the baby for a couple till the birth of the baby. Once the baby is born, it is given to the couple who are considered the parents of the baby.
In gestational surrogacy, IVF process is used to fertilize the egg and the surrogate mother only carries the baby till birth. The baby in this process is genetically related to the couple.
Surrogacy is used when a woman has uterine issues if there is a condition due to which a woman cannot carry a pregnancy herself, if a woman has gone through hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), if a woman has suffered from multiple pregnancy losses, etc.
It is not always necessary that you will have to have an infertility treatment right away. Sometimes when you go to the infertility doctor, they will evaluate your problem and depending on the issue they may prescribe some fertility drugs. Also, remember fertility drugs are a part of IVF treatment and they can also be used along with other infertility treatments as well.
The function of the fertility drug varies according to the drug. Some drugs signal your brain to make more reproductive hormones and some can mimic these hormones which can help with conception. Depending on the drug, it can be taken orally, or injected into the body through an injection or through the vagina. The fertility drugs can be used for ovarian stimulation, to prevent premature ovulation, to promote implantation of the egg in the womb, etc.
IVF treatment is by far the most demanded infertility treatment because of its success rates. But other treatments can also be used depending on the fertility issue. After examining your fertility issue your doctor will tell you about the best option for you to treat your infertility and have a baby.
